[It's dark in space. Lance knew that for a while already, but he never realized just how dark it really is out there in the universe when the only lights around are the soft blue ones on their armor. It's been a very long time since he was a little kid who slept with a nightlight on to keep the monster in his closet away while he sleeps, but with nothing else to distract him that's where his mind goes.
Home. Family. It's ironic how something so close to him can be so impossibly far away.
He can't allow himself to think so fatalistically. Morale is already so low and the only thing he can still do for everyone is to not lose himself in his own head and withdraw completely. At first that had been easy enough. Start pointless conversations, get either polite small talk or be told to shut up in return. Either one was fine by him as long as it wasn't quiet. As long as they had some affirmation of their existence that's all that mattered.
But now that they've agreed to taking turns sleeping so that at least one person is awake to keep an eye out for either help or danger and it's Lance's turn to keep vigilant, he's nauseated by how oppressive silence is. He shouldn't be making any noise while people try to sleep, but.... under his breath he begins to hum a song.[
